Is Real Madrid's Mesut Özil the Best Player on the German Squad?
Editor's Note: I saw this FanPost recently, and thought Ismail raised an interesting point, so I decided to feature it on the front page. If you have a point to make, and don't feel like it fits into the comments (or if you want to take the time to write out a whole article!), go ahead and post a FanPost--I'll more than likely feature it on the front page!
Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player on the Portugues team
Karim Benzema is probably the best player on the French team
So is Real Madrid's Mesut Özil the best German international? I think it would probably be between him and schweinsteiger. But I'd go with Ozil. Its pretty crazy that few knew him only two years ago and now he's possibly the best player on the most stacked international team outside of Spain. I'm really interested in his development as I think he is probably the most important player that Real Madrid's quest to get over the Barcelona hump. I also have a feeling that he's going to take the next step by having a monster Euro 2012 and he'll finally be talked about with the other superstars of the game.
*update*
Cristiano Ronaldo apparently thinks Ozil is the best German player as well.
"He is currently the best German player."

Thomas Muller
Miroslav Klose, Manuel Neuer and the aforementioned Bastian. All better than Ozil IMO

Ozil has the talent to be the best
Muller – Was the one of the three best players at the WC, Ozil was not
Klose – All-time leading goalscorer at the WC. Who cares if he plays badly outside, that takes quality, and he is one of the best playing for Germany
Neuer – Has shown he can carry a team, Ozil has been fortunate enough to sign for a team that he has other quality players to play with
Bastian – Ozil has had 1 great season with Real, Bastian as had at least 5 more with Bayern.
Not trolling, going by awards here…

Manuel Neuer
I can understand if someone thinks Neuer is best player on the team. The guy carried Schalke alone for years. Best Goalkeeper after Casillas.
But, In Ozil you get creator supreme, boy can pass, and now he is scoring consistently. Those avatar eyes can see pass that no one in German team can. Germany are a very counter attacking team just like Madrid and ozil is always in the thick of it. Just look at Ozil’s 3rd goal against Austria.
I don’t know why but i like the analogy of Germany being Madrid and Spain being Barca (without the blood bath). Germans are he second best team by a mile in the world but still can’t win anything because Spain are there at the top. :(

I disagree for the following reasons:
Neuer……..You can’t really compare Neuer to Ozil, apples to oranges.
Klose,..no. Not even close in my opinion. Klose is certainly a prolific striker, especially internationally. But the way the Germans move the ball, I think you can put a number of players who could give you his production. I don’t think there’s more than 2 or 3 players with Ozil’s creativity. Also,..he’s not nearly as consistent as Ozil. Klose doesn’t show up for club games, only international.
Thomas Muller,….again, he’s a great striker but without the excellent midfielders that German team is nothing. So to me, their strikers (klose and Muller) do so well good largely because they have world class midfielders setting them up. Muller had a field day in South Africa last summer because Ozil, Schweinsteiger and the rest were setting up chip shots for him. To his credit his finishing is incredible.
Shweinsteiger,…well I’d have to say he’s Ozil’s only competition.
Agreed,
Schweini is the only one that can compete with him.
Hasta el final, vamos Real.

Mesut ist ein gut spieler
Aber es gibt kein “I” im Mannschaft. Die Deutsh mannshaft hat vieler groB fussball spieler das is kein nur Ozil.

Ozil is an important player
I love how Ozil is conquering his place in the first team and showing he is an important asset to the National Team BUT it’s a bit early to crown him as the best, he will have to bring in a trophy and lead that trophy, as of now he is the most important player in midfield, the flow of his movements is something the Germans lack, and his time at Madrid/La Liga made him improve.
Right then
You all say Ozil is better?
FIFA Best Young Player at the World Cup:
Mesut Ozil – nominee
Thomas Muller – Winner
Performance at the World Cup
Mesut Ozil – Most assists
Thomas Muller – Most goals
World Soccer 2010 Young Player of the Year
Ozil – Nominee
Muller – Winner
Muller has won the Silbernes Lorbeerblatt award and the Bravo Award
So you are disagreeing not only wih me, but FIFA, and some of the most respected journalists in the world (World Soccer)
No doubt Ozil has more talent, but to say he is the best now is ludicrous, give him more time, then bring up this argument.

Fifa... meh
Since I saw Xavi nominated with Messi and Ronaldo I lost all hope in UEFA/Fifa, Ozil killed the stats last year but Xavi makes the list, and it’s not only this last award even the last couple of years UEFA/Fifa have been killing talented players off, so I’d rather go with what my eyes tell me.
And also, Muller is an amazing player and I’m not taking any credit away from him, but the current Germany Squad never had an Ozil before and he will have to prove his worth with a trophy.
The question you have to ask yourself
Are those FIFA awards an objective measure of how good a player is? Do you HONESTLY believe that?
If you’re measuring how good someone is by how many goals they score then Muller is better than Ozil. But that doesn’t take into consideration the fact that without Ozil and Shweinsteiger, Muller wouldn’t be scoring all those goals. They were practically serving his goals on a platter
You can’t punish Ozil because the major awards is all major sports are always biased toward people who put points on the scoreboard. Basketball, football, any sport.
The stat you provide says it all,…who led the World Cup in assists? Ozil. I will argue that assists are more important than goals. Strikers are a dime a dozen. You can find a good striker much more easily than you can find a good playmaking midfielder. Its no contest IMO.
Also, as a fun side note,….the best goal scored by the German side in WC2010 based on pure quality was Ozil’s against Ghana :)

haha true
But without the right player to finish off the move, the passes mean nothing. Read what Jose said above, you cannot say player x is more important, as the team is what they work best in.

Ozil was born in October of 1988, so he wasn’t eligible for FIFA’s best young player of the World Cup (who must have been born AFTER July 1989).
But he was nominated for the Golden Ball, so perhaps that is the award you are thinking of? I can’t remember anymore if Mueller was also nominated for that but I’d be shocked if he wasn’t.
So much youth and talent on my National team!
Agreeing with Mourinho
Last season Mourinho said this of Ozil’s performance.. ‘high, lull at times". However, last season was Ozil’s first in RM. I will give him 9.5 out of 10. Superb passing, ball sense, field awareness. I think he is lacking in physique prowess and stamina but Mourinho is already probably working on that. All that with things like focus, concentration for the entire duration of 90 minutes! And evolving his play as game progresses. When I watch him last season, I gave many ‘wow’ for his performance.
This season, he has improved a lot, judging from the pre-season. He will produce many magical nights for RM.
Go Ozil!!!
Benzema?
Ok Ozil is the best german international but Benzema is not the best french international. Ribery is.
