Real Madrid Vs. Barcelona, 2012 Copa Del Rey: El Clasico Open Match Thread

via www.curiosasnoticias.com

Update, 9:15 PM CET: WE HAVE LINEUPS!

Real Madrid XI: Casillas; Altintop, Ramos, Carvalho, Coentrao; Xabi Alonso, Pepe, Lass; Cristiano, Benzema and Higuaín.

FC Barcelona XI: Pinto; Alves, Puyol, Piqué, Abidal; Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta; Cesc, Alexis Sánchez and Messi.

Interesting play here by Mourinho. Let's see how it pans out--drop us your comments below!

***

Deep breath, madridistas! Real Madrid are gearing up to host FC Barcelona in the first leg of their 2012 Copa del Rey quarterfinal. We've done the best we can breaking down the match from every angle--Lucas has a piece on tactics, Timm talked about injuries, Laila wonders if El Clasico has lost its' sparkle, and I wrote this preview. And there has been more, but I won't bother you with any more links.

So, as we head into the clásico, we only have a few questions: who will win the beautiful hand of Lady Luck? Will Pepe play for Real Madrid? Will Leo Messi continue his brilliant form against Iker Casillas? Will Madrid finally break their losing streak in the Bernabéu to Barcelona?

Tonight we'll answer all of these questions. Hopefully. And then we'll be back at it next week. God help us.

Here are the lineups, though we've refrained from speculating as to the starters.

Real Madrid: Keepers: Casillas, Adán and Mejías; Defenders: Ramos, Marcelo, Varane, Albiol, Pepe, Coentrão, Arbeloa and Carvalho; Midfielders: Lass, Xabi Alonso, Özil, Callejón, Sahin, Granero, Kaká, Altintop, Di María and Khedira; Forwards: Cristiano Ronaldo, Higuaín and Benzema.

Barcelona: Keepers: Valdés, Pinto; Defenders: Piqué, Puyol, Mascherano, Abidal, Montoya, Dani Alves; Cesc, Xavi, Sergio Busquets, Adriano, Iniesta, Jonathan dos Santos, Sergi Roberto; Forwards: Alexis, Messi, Thiago, Cuenca.

HALA MADRID!

Wow...That sure is a interesting line up.

..Pepe in the midfield was a given. His only job all night is going to be to shut down Messi. I’m pretty sure that’s all he’s going to do tonight is be the leader of the lollipop guild’s shadow.

But think Mourinho has no chance. It was Altintop OR Altintop if he wanted to play Lass in the middle. Coentrao-Marcelo not a solution.

by MychalShannon1 on Jan 18, 2012 10:56 PM CET up reply actions

We're one up

but its only a matter of time till Barca score, we need to spruce play at the front, but then we’ll risk giviing barca more room, and they’re out for blood. Pepe has a yellow card and we know they’re going to do everything in their power to get him sent off.

This is a hard one, but I’ll say sacrifice Pepe, he’s too much of a risk.

by Hes Man on Jan 18, 2012 10:54 PM CET reply actions

By putting Ozil to replace Pepe

We likely switch to a 3-5-2 formation to stifle the midfield. Huge risk.

I have said this to Timm before and that is this Real team CANNOT beat Barcelona. They are not good enough it is that simple. Barcelona toy with this Real team and I am a fan of Jose but he is caught in the perfect storm and cannot get out of it. He needs to step away and realise that Pepe is useless. Xavi is too slow and there is no creativity anywhere on the park. Where the hell is Sahin? where are the playmakers.. Lass, Coentrao, for heavens sake.. Danni Alvez is a better attacker than our midfield. Its time to wake up and sell Kaka, Pepe, Lass and a few others and bring in Schweinsteiger, Hazard and Neymar who dont fear Barcelona like this team does. They may win the league but will NEVER beat Barcelona with this outfit

by oldblueboy53 on Jan 18, 2012 11:57 PM CET reply actions

Faith is a blind optimist

I know football and these players are rabbits in headlights. Watch the game again tomorrow and Barcelona should have won by 3 goals easy. Pep has Jose nailed!

by oldblueboy53 on Jan 19, 2012 12:01 AM CET up reply actions

Faith is Investment

Each game we invest so much faith on this team, but get heartbreaks in return. When you play well and lose its ok. But if you cant even string passes together like Real Betis vs Barcelona, and you are Real Madrid, then I must say that you are giving your fans too much hurt. We would come again with our investments next week….who knows what would happen. goodnight all.

by Freddyme on Jan 19, 2012 12:12 AM CET up reply actions

Hey y'all

It’s gonna be alright. This kind of stuff is annoying, disappointing, etc., but ultimately we’ll all be the better for it. We’ll celebrate harder when that day comes, and we’ll get just that much more enjoyment out of it. Be proud of yourselves for sticking with your team when things were the hardest. We’ve got a great community here—let’s not get too pissed about the result of this one match.

And I’ll see you all next week when we have to do this again, but hopefully with a slightly more fun result. Hala Madrid.

by Abuzar on Jan 19, 2012 12:03 AM CET reply actions

There is a perfect analogy

between Real Madrid and the Chicago Bulls of the early 1990’s. It took the Bulls 3 years to get the best of the Detroit Pistons and reaching their goal of winning that elusive title. I believe that RM are in that same path and eventually they will get the best of Barca for good. It is inevitable that we’ll win in Nou Camp like or not.

by Thierry D on Jan 19, 2012 12:05 AM CET reply actions

I like this.

I too think we will beat them again eventually it’s just so so frustrating. 1 win in the past 13 Clasicos I think it is now.

by MychalShannon1 on Jan 19, 2012 12:22 AM CET via mobile up reply actions

I'm starting to abhor the Clasico with the passion of a thousand suns.

Neither Mourinho or his players have the cojones to play Barcelona face to face. Florentino should hire a mental coach so this group of players can overcome the fucking mental block they get everytime they see a Barcelona uniform.

I’ve been a fan of this club since I was 8 yrs. old, I’m not giving up after just one match (or ten). But damn it, this is freaking frustrating. Seeing how lesser teams are able to contain Barca, yet RM with all its offensive prowess always end up shitting the bed.

Here’s hoping they don’t throw away the 5 pt lead in La Liga.

by e-scofield on Jan 19, 2012 12:09 AM CET reply actions

spot on

I know how you feel. Every team has its nemesis and unfortunately Barcelona just love stuffing it to Real

by oldblueboy53 on Jan 19, 2012 12:12 AM CET up reply actions

not good enogh

the problem lies in our midfield as cryuff had said a few months bak
we need to get sahin fit and in the starting line up
play ronaldo as a striker (no 9) for a few games until hes used 2 it
benzema and di maria in tthe wings
ozil in the centre
and maintain this pressing game
the fact is :barca are better individually and cohesively
so mourinho needs to try something new

by kevin009 on Jan 19, 2012 12:16 AM CET reply actions

Also, what respectable coach, with an ounce of common sense, decides to put a player who hasn’t played in 3+ months, in a match against Barca?

I think Mou is a great coach, heck, the match against Mallorca last Sunday showed that, but there comes a time when you have to start questioning some of his decisions.

by e-scofield on Jan 19, 2012 12:21 AM CET reply actions

Ugly game, uglier outcome

Tonight they played a “turrible” game. At least in the Liga game they played great for 10 minutes, but tonight they giftwrapped the ball to Barça from minute 1.

And when they get the leading goal, they hesitate to play and keep giving the ball to Barça… they don’t have an attacking mentality, and that’s what they must change. Barça is a great team, but Madrid isn’t that bad.

Eventually, like Thierry says, age will catch up with Xavi and Pujol, and things will balance again. Fabregas and Thiago are nice, but they’re not Xavi Hernández, the best player in the game. If Mou and Florentino show some common sense and keep building a young dynamic team, they’ll have their moment.

The other thing this Madrid team should do right now is stop focusing on the refs. Play the game, and shut up. Barça is a more focused team, that’s where they are far superior to Madrid. You could swap Pep for Mou and the result would still be the same, the lack of focus and character is what keeps Madrid from smashing Barça.

Right now, we’re experiencing what Barça fans have lived during decades, so I feel a bit for them, it’s disgusting to face someone who knows his role and executes better than you… and always beat you. Disgusting, really.

Congrats to Barça fans, their team was better today and deserved a good result, although Abidal makes a perfect handball play when he controls the ball.

Hala Madrid, and Hala Managing Madrid ;)

I don't know what are you talking about

I was proud of my team. It was almost a new team, new formation. But everyone fought hard. Compare this to the last match when we lost 3-1. The spirit of this team was something else. Fighting the whole 90 minutes. Defending very well. I can’t even believe how good Casillas was. Off course we have problems. In another time I will talk about that. But I just love how they stand for the whole game together and tried their best.
It pisses me off when we lose a game like that 3-1. But here, with kind of Real Madrid B, I only can be thankful. Next game we will have Di Maria and Alberoa Back and Ozil/Kaka will play more. Maybe even Khedira. And hopefully we will play a better game.

by Payam Fakhraie on Jan 19, 2012 12:27 AM CET reply actions

I didn't like the game

we can agree to disagree, but I was talking about the same game. They defended well in the first half, but they gave the possession to Barça, waiting for them too close to Casillas.

In the Liga game, they lost 1-3, but they played very well in the first 10 minutes. After that they were scared to attack, and started giving possession AND position to Barça, just like they like.

Madrid should’ve played more aggressively in the second half, attacking them and making them doubt. Instead of that, they giftwrapped the ball to Barça, and as always, they recovered their trust and then played at their pleasure.

In the second half, they’re human and couldn’t keep the defensive intensity. In my opinion, Mou should’ve put Ozil at the start of the second, to mantain the ball in their feet and try to make Barça chase white jerseys. But that’s just my opinion.

I also hope Madrid play better next week, at some point they’re going to realise they can do better than this, and beat Barça. I know they can do it.

Real stupidity beats artificial intelligence every time.

I was gonna say this exact thing. We’re still growing game by game. The bulk of this team has only been together for a year and a half. We’re still very young and there’s lots of potential with this team. Barca have been together much longer and know
each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Things will even out soon and we’ll start getting results just need more time. We’re getting closer we saw that today.
