Hey MMers, check out this analysis of Marcelo's performance on Saturday, courtesy of our friends at SC1 Sports. They go into a lot of detail with his positioning, both offensive and defensive, and I think it sheds some light on a lot of interesting parts of the Brazilian's game.
Here's a quote, just to whet your appetite:
In recent times it has been a rarity to see Marcelo struggle in his role at left-back. It goes without saying that Real Madrid dominate most games, and this suits Marcelo as he surges forward with regularity, purpose and quality. He is certainly a much better defender now than when he joined the club however when he is up against a particularly good winger or against a particularly good team, his defensive indiscipline can be exposed. As effective as he is from left-back he doesn’t possess many of the attributes of a natural defender.
Having said that, in the modern game, the role of the full-back encapsulates a lot more than just defending.
