Every club in a particular league have a distinct style of play attributed to their parent nation, as in the case of the rough and tumble of the premier league, the exciting flair of the Brazilian league or simply the conservatism of the Italian Seria A.This being a result of the all familiar policy of preferring domestic players followed by most clubs barred certain exceptions.Although domestic recruitment in itself is an admirable objective it comes at the expence of versatility on the football field.
FC Barcelona epitomizes this phenomenon. Mirroring the Spanish style of play the ‘tika taka’ have earned them unparallel acclaim for the last three years unlocking defences at will and more importantly entertaining their fans. But in the 2011-2012 season something went wrong the supposed invincible FC Barcelona suffered draw after draw, and conceding wasn’t the problem.
They were unable to penetrate defences as they were before as illustrated in their champions league defeat to Chelsea. The reason ?Defences had evolved ,and a lack of a plan B certainly didn’t help.
Real Madrid on the other hand haven’t fallen victim to the same situation as Barcelona. The reason?Versatality, for Real Madrid don’t follow a particular style of play as such. This is because the squad itself is a mix of cultures. The dribbling tenacity of the Argentineans epitomised by angel dimaria. The explosiveness of the Portuguese reflected by Ronaldo .Perfect german one touch counter attacks exhibited by ozil and khedira.Real Madrid have it all. They are capable of switching to an english style and put crosses into the box for tall target men like ronaldo to finish. They are capable of sitting back and playing on the counter as exhibited by their goal against ajax last year. They are capable of retaining possession for extended periods as statistics clearly suggest. They are equally adept at playing the occasional long ball when things don’t go their way. And if all else fails they can rely on ronaldo and dimaria to weave through defences and score the occasional howler. To conclude I would like to say that Real Madrid are a model when it comes to style of play since its dynamism negates predictability and gives us fans plenty to remember
