Against Betis Real Madrid had too much space in-between all of their lines. It was a disappointing way to start the game. Thankfully Pepe Mel's side didn't make the most of their advantages in the first half. The lack of pressure from the two front players caused problems for the rest of the team.
Too many times without the ball Real Madrid looked like this in transition and defence:
Obviously too much space in-between the lines. Our centre midfielders had too much space ahead and behind them. Their centre midfielders had too much time and space to play with the ball. This is how we conceded.
Ronaldo and Benzema didn't not put pressure on the other their centre midfielders meaning either Modric or Khedira had to step up on them and this resulted in a gap between the defence and centre midfielders.
Ramos and Pepe were too deep when the rest of their team was so high on the field. The centre backs must make this distance shorter even if the forwards do put better pressure. Positioning is not their best quality but they must do better.
It was a very preventable situation. The best way to prevent this situation is get our front players (Ronaldo and Benzema) behind the ball. Now our centre midfielders do not have the same risk as getting caught up the pitch with bad pressing. Our centre backs can also step up and make the team a much tighter unit. Shortening space between the lines and being in position to win the ball back quickly. Like this:
We had a lot of other problems but this is one I wanted to highlight. It shows the importance of helping the team without the ball. Both of Ronaldo and Benzema may not even have to do this against most teams but one of them will have to put pressure on the passing centre midfielder.
