We have been hearing this track-back nonsense a lot these days since BVB and Bayern wingers are doing it perfectly and it yielded success for their team. But I wanted to think laterally and see if it is really required if our team needs to succeed. Yes, to a certain extent. But those wingers are not in the league of Ronaldo or Bale. They are traditional wingers who are gaining attention again nowadays.
In European football, wingers are expected to track back and support their full backs whenever he requires a support. But we have two attack minded, gifted wingers, who is always eager to score rather than track back and defend. Cristiano is playing in hybrid winger/striker role and Bale nevertheless tracks back sometime. We need to change our tactics and break the traditional way of playing and somehow provide support for our defensive line. Like Modric did in the other night against Athletic. But we need a pure DM like Makelele, De Rossi and hell our own Xabi needed more than ever.
Cristiano has more to offer in the attack since Benzema is looking hapless and there is no one else to score the amount of goals required for the team. It is better to play without a true #9 and paly Bale/Ronaldo upfront. It is also important for Isco to understand the need of feeding our superhumans and he should track back. It is still early to judge on Isco but he was there from the pre-season and played almost all the matches. He certainly needs to learn quickly and adapt to the play selfless game. It is good that he has an eye for the goal but his 15-20 goals per season cannot win us any silverware. It is lies in the hands of Cristiano and Bale. So he better learn to give perfect through balls.
Ronaldo's game is based on dribbling with the pace, cut-in from the left, always keep on eye for the goal and he is pretty much needed to stay in the front whenever a counter attack is initiated. He needs to save is energy for the entire 90 minutes to beat the defensive line. It is a total stupidity to ask Ronaldo to track back. He is not your traditional winger who dribbles provide crosses and track back. It is hard to define his role as a player. He is more of a striker. I accept that he needs to start pressing more whenever he lose the ball, which he is already doing and needs some more tweaking. And again, He isn't your classic winger and his primary function lies in attack. Traditional wingers scores 15-20 goals a year and provides around 10 assists, but Ronnie is in different league and Ancelotti needs to learn that and change is approach and tactics.
Below are some of the goals scored Ronaldo, which sums up what he is really made of.
We need to deploy a double pivot with Luka and Khedira as the CMs, for some reasons Illara is not the player who can pair with Modric. It is harsh to judge from one game, but Sami outsmarts him in terms to Physical prowess and ability to contribute defensively. It is also time to bench Benz and bring Di Maria in, he can track back well and provide the required width in the right. Imagine the combination of Bale/Di Maria in the right wing. This all possession-oriented game might work in long run, but against a team like Villarreal, which played with so extraordinary pace, we need alternative tactics and needed someone like Xabi to control the game. Luka can fill in his shoes provided he is paired up with the right player like Sami.
To sum up, we need to play good football and track is not much required when we can keep our CM and Defensive line strong and my starting 11 for the Gala match is below with the role of the player's expected
