Hope is in the Air for Real Madrid Basketball

Rudy is showing what he really has as a basketball player
Rudy is showing what he really has as a basketball player

Florentino Pérez has decided to invest big in the basketball section this year. He signed Rudy Fernandez and Serge Ibaka during the NBA lockout. He also signed a nice shooter, Jaycee Carroll (one of the best ACB players in the last two seasons), and small forward, Martynas Pocius.

Our team has started the season quite well, conceding just one loss at Bilbao's field in the league and another in one of the most difficult arenas to play, Maccabi Tel Aviv's. Fernández has shown why he is a dominant player in European basketball, and Carroll still needs to wake up, but when he does, he will be able to replace Rudy when the Spanish player goes back to Dallas.

Rudy's contract is an odd one. He's our player until the lockout is over. Once the NBA resumes, Rudy will be forced to go back to Dallas and finish the season there. His contract in the NBA will end and he will have offers to stay in the States. If he wants to play in the NBA, he will have to pay Real Madrid a compensation, so if Rudy doesn't get a big contract, he will join Real Madrid  at the beginning of next season.

Ibaka's situation is different. He is here just to replace Velickovic while the Serbian recovers from his injury. Ibaka will not be tied to Real Madrid like Rudy, so let's have fun with him while we can.

It would be good if Carroll started to play at his true level, especially since Rudy will be gone for the rest of the season sooner or later. The American shooter is a really nice player and I am confident that we will not miss Rudy much when the lockout ends.

This team is weak in the point guard position. We have Sergio Llull, who is almost a shooting guard, and Sergio Rodríguez. Llull wants to start fast breaks all the time, but later in the season we will need a point guard that knows how to manage the tempo when the game slows down. That kind of a point guard is not Sergio Rodríguez.

It's already too late, but we should have signed Milos Teodosic when we had the chance. When we play against Barcelona and other European elite teams, we will surely have to slow things down, but Laso's system is not that good in static games.

I really believe this team has the chance to do something big in the future, but we really need to add two pieces. One is a pure point guard, and the other is a dominant Center. We need a defensive presence in the low post against the likes of Schorsanitis, Ndong, and Fran Vázquez. I don't believe Begic is that much of a defensive Center, but we could teach him to be one.

This is not going to be our year because of Rudy's situation, but when he comes back for the rest of his contract, our team will certainly have a chance to win both in the league and Europe again.
