Real Madrid Basketball beat a favored Regal FC Barcelona squad 74-91 in Barcelona this evening to win their 23rd Copa Del Rey. Coach Pablo Laso's side has had an up and down (but mostly up) year so far, and this most recent win should solidify the side as a top-tier European power. Beating arch-rival Barcelona should feel especially sweet for Laso's men, and beating them in Barcelona only makes the victory more impressive. Madrid has not won the Basketball Copa Del Rey in 19 years.
Madrid swingman Sergio Llull won MVP of the match with a stunning 23 and 5, while making five threes. Jaycee Caroll, his partner in the back court for long stretches, helped Madrid cruise past Barcelona in the last quarter by making several huge three pointers--Carroll finished with 22 points.
Real Madrid shot an astounding 62% on two-point attempts, and 45% on threes to dethrone Barcelona in the Palau Sant Jordi. Special mention should also be made of Pablo Laso's brilliant, physical defensive scheme, which aggravated Barcelona's big men all night. Madrid's interior defense--and relentless wing pressure--made the Regal Barcelona squad uncomfortable in their own house.
This is a truly great victory for Real Madrid, in all facets of the organization, and one that should make for further victories in the near future. Gloat with Managing Madrid by liking us on facebook, following us on twitter, and subscribing to our podcast on iTunes.
