Pepe Has Surgery In His Right Ankle

The Portuguese defender had surgery this Wednesday morning in Oporto after he returned from the Christmas break with pain in his right ankle. The Dutch specialist Van Dijk (the one who took care of Cristiano Ronaldo's ankle in his first year with Real Madrid) performed an ankle arthroscopy.

Pepe didn't practice with the team on Tuesday, and the club revealed why this Wednesday. The Portuguese defender traveled to Portugal to undergo an arthroscopy on his right ankle. Apparently, he wasn't feeling well enough with his ankle, and after explorations, that little surgery looked to be necessary.

The surgery was on Van Dijk's hands, one of the best specialists in football injuries. The Dutch doctor healed Cristiano Ronaldo's ankle back in 2009 after Marseille's Diawara injured Ronaldo in the Champions League Group Stage. He also took care of Marcelo's ankle when the Brazilian left back was injured this past October.

A timetable for Pepe's return hasn't been set yet. We want to wish him a full and early recovery.
