If you take a look any Casillas's career highlights video, the penalty shootouts in the Spain-Italy and Spain-Portugal games will, for sure, be there. However, in order to build his legend as a Real Madrid player, penalty saves have not been such a remarkable factor.

However, with a 1-2 lead in the second half, the penalty he saved last night was crucial to secure a victory that has proved to be really important in Real Madrid's quest to La Liga. This, together with the fact that FC Barcelona were not able to beat Getafe this afternoon, has made sure that Los Blancos will keep the leadership until 2015, even taking into account that the game their game against Sevilla that was scheduled for the next weekend will be postponed until February.

That brilliant save was his eleventh in a league game, the first since March 2011, when he saved a penalty kick shot by Pinillos, from Racing de Santander. This way, Iker tied with César Sánchez, who also managed to save eleven penalty kicks in his league career. This way, Palop, with 12, and Cañizares and Alves, with 13, are the only goalkeepers in the last twenty years with more penalty shots blocked in La Liga than Casillas.
