The RFEF have just released the official list of the referees appointed for the games in the first leg of the Copa del Rey Round of 16. The Aragonese Clos Gómez will referee our game against Atlético de Madrid in the Vicente Calderón stadium, on January 7th.
Although this designation should not affect the final outcome of the tie, the truth is that there is a tempestuous history between both parties. Clos Gómez was the man pointed by the famous thirteen-mistake list written by José Mourinho, and he was also there when we played against Osasuna last season and saw Ramos rigurously sent out in the first half. But probably, the bitterest memory we have regarding this referee is the Copa del Rey final in 2013, when we lost against Atlético de Madrid in, probably, the game in which Real Madrid missed the biggest number of clear goal chances in their recent history.
In the year 2014, Clos Gómez refereed the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals against Atlético in February (3-0 for Real Madrid), a Real Madrid - Valencia in May, when we finally said good-bye to La Liga (2-2), and this season's Real Madrid - Elche in La Liga (5-1).
