2014 Champions League Semifinals: Real Madrid Vs Bayern Munich (1-0). Player Ratings

Extraordinary collective performance by our players to take advantage in the semifinals against Europe's ugliest ogre.

Paul Gilham

Iker Casillas: A. He did not have too much work in the first half, but he left a great save against Goetze in the second half to keep the lead in the scoreboard.

Dani Carvajal: A-. Good job by Dani, who drove Ribéry to such a dispair that had to be substituted. His offensive work was valuable as well.

Pepe: A-. His ability to defend the box was quite manifest today, but his lack of patience to initiate some of Real Madrid's attacks may have costed us the opportunity of scoring a second goal. He left the pitch injured in the second half.

Sergio Ramos: A. Similar display to that of Pepe's, but his job with the ball was tidier.

Fábio Coentrao: A+. Extraordinary. Defensively impenetrable and absolutely crucial in offensive tasks, giving his partners a continuous way of escape in the left wing. His assist to Benzema was perfect.

Xabi Alonso: A+. Undisputed Man Of The Match today. I can't remember a single wrong action of his today. Tactically superb, great positioning and vision in the first pass but, more importantly, his leadership was crucial today to keep the midfield tight and focused to defend Bayern's onslaughts.

Modric: A. A great partner for Alonso today. Always helpful in both attack and defense, his conductions in the second half improved the team's offensive performance a lot.

Isco: A-. Not as bright as usual with the ball, but his defensive display in a rough match like today's must be acclaimed. He had a few great minutes with extraordinary passes close to Bayern's box.

Di María: A-. Well played by Fideo, intense as usual, although the absence of a second goal may be attributed to his lack of pause.

Benzema: A. Great game by Karim, whose serenity and ability of stay out of pressure are unvaluable in a semifinal. And, of course, the goal.

Cristiano Ronaldo: A-. Lessened as he was by his recent injury, his performance was not as explosive as we would have hoped. However, his pass to Coentrao in the play that ended with Benzema's goal was extraordinary.

Varane: B. He entered the game in the 72th to replace Pepe and was correct and tidy as usual.

Illarramendi: B. He replaced Isco to reinforce the midfield for the last few minutes and did not make any mistake.

Bale: B+. His entrance gave the team the oxygen they needed to confront the last minutes. He had a couple of chances that he created almost by himself, but he could have ended them better.
