Levante Beat Atlético 2-0 to Give Real Madrid Golden Opportunity in La Liga

Levante's 2-0 victory on Sunday in Valencia over league leaders Atlético de Madrid blew the title race wide open and gave rivals Real Madrid an opportunity to overtake them should they drop points against Málaga or Barcelona in their remaining games.

An early own-goal from Filipe Luis and a superb 69th minute strike from Real Madrid youth product David Barral along with a man-of-the-match performance from goalkeeper Keylor Navas sent plucky Levante to a 2-0 win over league leaders Atlético de Madrid on Sunday.

Atlético's defeat could prove to be a critical run in La Liga's tight title race, as city rivals Real Madrid have two games in hand and are now six points off the top.

Were Real Madrid and Atlético to finish level on points, which would be the result if both teams won all of their remaining games, Atlético would win the title by virtue of their superior head-to-head record, having recorded a win and a draw against the Castellana outfit this season.

However, the loss removes Atlético's margin of safety and means that any slip-up in their last two games could cost them the league title.  The final game of the season at the Camp Nou against Barcelona puts all three leading teams in an interesting position where a draw or a point for Barcelona could give the title to their hated rivals. Or perhaps they would rather throw the game than see that happen? Regardless, the 2013-2014 La Liga title run-in is set to be quite exciting.
