When you have a 21-year old central defender that is going to start the FIFA World Cup for France and is just a backup player for your club, some other elite teams might try to sign him and give him a starting role. That seems to be happening to Raphäel Varane, Real Madrid's talented young defender. After a slow recovery from his knee surgery, Varane had a minor role this season, even though he started the Champions League Final and played brilliantly. He looked rusty for much of the year, and with Pepe playing impressively, starting the Portuguese defender over the Frenchman seemed like a straight-forward decision for Carlo Ancelotti. But now, Varane might as well try to get some more minutes elsewhere, and Mourinho is watching the situation closely.
Varane seems to understand the situation well, and he has recently spoken about Chelsea's supposed interest.
It's not the time to think about that. There's a World Cup ahead and we need to get ready for it.
And according to a report by Marca, Varane will meet with Carlo Ancelotti after the World Cup to see what the Italian coach has in mind for him, since Mourinho would've offered him a starting spot especially now that David Luiz has signed for PSG. Real Madrid will probably try to keep Varane by whatever means necessary, but if the player wants to leave, it will be hard to make him stay.
