Real Madrid's shortlist for the midfield gets shaken up

Verratti, Kroos and Ramires are apparently Ancelotti's priorities to improve Real's depth in the center of the field.

There are three potential transfer targets for Real Madrid's midfield this summer. Carlo Ancelotti wants to add a bit of creativity with either Verratti or Toni Kroos, while Ramires appears to be the other player Real Madrid are interested in signing. We're guessing that Ancelotti wants another replacement for Xabi Alonso or just one more center midfielder to cover up for Di María's potential departure, even though Isco should then take that role.

Here's the situation and latest news of those three potential signings.

  • Marco Verratti: Verratti would be the ideal signing for Real Madrid. Out of those three targets, he's the one with more experience as a deep playmaker, although his defensive skills aren't as great as Alonso's because of his small body. That's the reason why it would be bold to start a Verratti-Modric-Di María midfield. PSG could need the money after being punished for the UEFA Financial Fair Play. They spent 50M€ on David Luiz this summer and apparently they will also make a bid for Eden Hazard. According to Sky Sports, Real Madrid will meet with Verratti's agent in Brazil next week.

  • Toni Kroos: He could be a very good replacement for Modric or Ángel Di María in Ancelotti's three-man midfield. However, he hasn't played that often in Alonso's position and he grew up as an attacking midfielder playing behind the strikers. Still, his physical presence and tactical awareness could help him while trying to learn how to play deep. He wants out of Bayern Munich because he believes he should get more money. That situation and considering his contract expires next summer would make him the cheapest player out of the three. Some reports say that he's agreed to join Real Madrid and it is all up to the clubs now.
  • Ramires: It would be a really strange signing if Khedira stays with Real Madrid. He's not a deep midfielder and likes to rush forward and shoot the ball from distance. Ramires is not a playmaker but a box-to-box midfielder. His signing would not make sense.
  • Other players: Arturo Vidal and Paul Pogba have also been linked with Real Madrid, although Juventus do not want to sell. Pogba could be a great fit but also an expensive one.
