It wasn't meant to be. Real Madrid lost 1-0 in the second leg of the Spanish Supercup to cross-town rivals Atletico Madrid. Los blancos did not deserve to win the game, playing badly for most of it, and were certainly not lucky enough to win the match either.
In today's Managing Madrid videocast, Gabe Lezra and Josh Zeitlin recap the match, analyzing Madrid's tactics, the refereeing, and various personnel issues that cropped up during the game. First, they dive into the negatives (there were many): from the lackadaisical defending to the refereeing to the seemingly toothless attack, they bring the hammer down on Madrid.
Second, they turn to ways Madrid can improve, including a conversation about whether the team is really in need of a "true" 9--something that they don't really have with Karim Benzema's penchant for dropping deep. They agree to disagree about certain signings and future options, and end with some housekeeping. Enjoy!
(Oh and a shoutout to the three people who came up to us in the bar today--it was great to meet you all! Hopefully we'll see a lot more of each other soon.)
