Illarramendi's tenure with Real Madrid should have probably been over a year ago, after Carlo Ancelotti decided to start the recently recovered Sami Khedira in Illarra's natural spot for the Champions League Final. That clearly destroyed Illarra's confidence and his second season with Real Madrid was nothing short of another disappointment even with Xabi Alonso gone and Luka Modric injured for a big part of the season.
This summer, Real Madrid are looking to offload Illarra, and there should be some clubs interested in the midfielder. For instance, he was rumored to be on Liverpool's radar, but nothing has happened ever since. Now, Illarramendi's lifelong club Real Sociedad denied having interest in Illarra, via their President Jokin Aperribay.
"We have not talked with Real Madrid or with the player's agent. For the moment, we're not exploring that option", said the President.
All things considered, Illarramendi might end up staying with the club if Lucas Silva is sent on loan. He would be the team's fourth midfielder.
