More bad news for Real Madrid. Gareth Bale was forced to leave the game with a calf injury and Varane was replaced by Pepe after the half-time whistle as well. The French defender was able to complete the first half and that might be good news given that his injury might not be as serious. On the other hand, Ramos injured his shoulder during the second half.
Varane does have a quality replacement in Pepe and although he started the season in very good form Real Madrid can afford to lose him for some games if Ramos' injury isn't serious.
Real Madrid are leading 2-0 with Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo as the goalscorers. Shakhtar are down to 10 men and Madrid will now be able to control the tempo of the game much more efficiently. Kovacic is playing great in the midfield after Benítez decided to introduce him when Bale got injured.
