Real Madrid - Shakhtar Donetsk, Champions League: Player Ratings

Ronaldo scored a hat-trick. Was his performance that good?

Keylor Navas: 7. The Costa Rican never needed to do much against Shakhtar even though the Ukrainian team managed to complete a good first half. Still, he made a good save when the game was already decided after a Shakhtar shot was deflected.

Carvajal: 6. Carvajal still needs to improve if he wants to start over Danilo when the Brazilian recovers from his injury. He was decent on defense but his offensive contribution left some to be desired.

Varane: 6. He was too confident on one particular play during the first half that could've meant an away goal. Varane left the game with an ankle injury after the first 45 minutes.

Ramos: 7. Ramos played better than his partner but he did not shine either. He had to be taken out with problems on his shoulder during the second half.

Marcelo: 8. The Brazilian bounced back from his mediocre display against Espanyol. Marcelo did not struggle against Shakhtar's attackers and he created some danger on offense as well.

Kroos: 8. Brilliant performance by the German midfielder, who simply controlled the game at will.

Modric: 8. Just like Kroos, Modric completed a very fine performance against a demanding Shakhtar midfield.

Isco: 7. Isco was one of Real's disappointments against Espanyol and he was much better in the Champions League game. His cross to Benzema on the second half was outstanding and that should have been an assist had Benzema scored the easy header.

Bale: 6. It's not easy -- nor fair -- to grade Bale's performance given that he had to leave the game early. However, he did contribute during the first few minutes.

Cristiano Ronaldo: 9. He scored a hat-trick and delivered what should have been an assist to Benzema when the game was still even. Still, Ronaldo needs to improve his overall contribution to Real Madrid's game.

Benzema: 7. The French striker wrote his name on the scoresheet but could have scored a hat-trick. He missed two very good scoring chances that shouldn't have been wasted.

Kovacic: 7. Encouraging performance by the Croatian. He was still a bit shy but he showed his quality in what were his best minutes as a Real Madrid player. Benítez will be able to rotate Modric this year.

Pepe: 7. Good second half from the Portuguese after replacing Varane. His battle with the French for the spot will be very interesting to watch.

Nacho: 6. He played only a few minutes but Shakhtar were already down to 10 men and the game was decided.
