Varane will have a chance to redeem himself for his mediocre performance against Athletic Bilbao as Pepe's status for Wednesday's clash against AS Roma is still doubtful. Varane will not be able to play next weekend against Málaga so it would be wise to give Pepe some more time to recover in order to have him available and replace Varane while he is suspended.
Pepe is still nursing some problems with his plantar fasciitis, a problematic injury that could bother him in the upcoming months if he doesn't treat it very carefully. Varane has not been playing well recently -- even though he did not deserve the red card he saw -- so it would be important to at least have Pepe as an option in case Varane's struggles continue.
Real Madrid will visit Roma next Wednesday in what will be the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie.
