Marcelo has not given up and is still hoping to feature in Wednesday's Champions League match against AS Roma. The Brazilian defender injured his shoulder a week ago and although it appeared that he would need more time to recover he has made some progress and could finally get the start if the medical staff and the player himself decide to take some risks.
Either way, Carvajal played well enough in the left flank to ensure that Marcelo has a decent replacement, so it would be wise to let him recover properly before risking a bigger injury that could keep him out longer in case something happens in Rome.
Keep in mind that Marcelo is the only pure left-back in the roster, so coach Zinedine Zidane will have to move either Carvajal, Danilo or Nacho out of position to replace the Brazilian defender if he finally isn't ready to play just yet.
