Real Madrid tried to sign Antonio Conte before Zidane was appointed

That's according to Gazzetta.

Even though it appeared quite clear that Real Madrid were going to name Zidane as Benítez's replacement long before the Spaniard was sacked, Gazzetta Dello Sport are reporting today that Los Blancos contacted Antonio Conte and tried to persuade him into leaving the Italian National Team to join Real Madrid.

According to this same report and surprisingly enough, Conte apparently said "no" to that offer, meaning that Madrid then decided to appoint Zidane as the first team's manager.

How accurate is this piece by Gazzetta Dello Sport? It would have been shocking to see Real Madrid signing Antonio Conte, although the Italian manager did a brilliant job with Juventus some years ago. Zidane probably fits better in this situation even though his team has already lost 4 points in the Liga BBVA since he took over, probably ending the race for the Liga title considering that Barcelona are now 9 points ahead
