Real welcomes Roma

Truly fantastic game this was at the Santiago Bernabeu. Two attack minded teams creating chances at both ends. Historically, whenever this two teams meet up there is always fireworks and tonight was no exception. Roma came out on the attacking front sooner than expected and throughout the game worried Real Madrid with some dangerous plays. Fantastic game which was rounded off by the Bernabeu giving Totti a warm ovation when he came on the field and truly showed his stature in world football, absolute class.

Keylor Navas

9.0/10.0

Fantastic performance from the Tico, he was absolutely vital for Real tonight. Navas was a complete wall on goal and kept his team with a clean sheet even after some truly dangerous open play chances from Roma. Navas was quick to close angles when in 1 on 1 situations and was decisive when jumping up and clearing the ball from his area. A fantastic performance by the Costa Rican international.

Marcelo

7.5

Typical performance from Marcelo tonight. He was quick to break on the counter with the team and was a swift threat on that left wing throughout the whole game. Defensively he was competent although he had some trouble keeping up with Salah on that wing, but to be fair so did the whole defense, however Marcelo left a lot of space for Roma to catch Real on the counter so many times.

Pepe

7.5

Solid showing by the Real vice-captain tonight but was still caught slow footed in the area and was not as decisive in the air as he usually is.

Sergio Ramos

8.5

Solid performance from the Camas native tonight. The Real Madrid captain had one of his most defensively convincing performances all season. He was fast to get back in position when his team was under pressure in the area and all of his tackles were essential.

Danilo

8.0

The former Porto man slowly looks like he is coming into his own at Real Madrid. Pretty solid performance from the full back tonight in which he gave the team a steady threat when going on the attack front and was firm with his defensive duties but he was still a bit slow when dealing with 1 on 1 situations and made a couple rash tackles including one on El Shaarawy.

Casemiro

8.5

Definetly one of the highlights of the night was Casemiro. The Brazilian was absolutely vital in his role in that crucial spot in midfield. The academy product took his defensive duties to heart and flew into every tackle with such energy and grit that gave that midfield a certain sense of security which had been absent since Xabi Alonso was there.

Luka Modric

9.5

Class, intelligence, crucial................there really are no words that do this man justice. Luka Modric was once again just.......Luka Modric and that's all that's necessary. The Croatian wizard was absolutely monumental tonight. Luka was always one play ahead of his opponent and incredibly accurate with his passes. Modric also had several attempts at goal which have been a revelation since Zidane arrived and has encouraged him to take more shots so expect to see more magic from the Croatian master.

Toni Kroos

8.0

The former Bayern Munich man had a night to remember tonight. With Casemiro to take over most of his defensive duties in midfield, Kroos was able to play a bit more advanced into that CAM position and even found himself delivering passes from the left wing. The German was still responsible enough to help out on defense when necessary and kept up his passing accuracy with some absolute gems to the attacking trio.

James Rodriguez

8.5

The attacking midfielder made his way high into the attacking trio and rounded off his night with a fantastic goal. The Colombian looks like he's still on his way to find his match rhythm but nonetheless he is on track to being great for Real once again.

Gareth Bale

8.0

Substantial performance from the Welshman tonight in his first start since coming back from injury. Bale was decisive on the right wing and found himself in a lot of space to send in crosses through the left as well.

Cristiano Ronaldo

8.5

The Real Madrid superstar let everyone know once again why the CL is his favorite competition. The Portuguese man was fantastic and could've had a hat-trick by the end of the night but some of his chances went wide. A great team play was finished off by him in which gave Real the lead in the second half and after that it was Real's show.

SUBSTITUTES:

Lucas Vasquez

9.0

Wonderful performance from the Galician born academy player tonight. Fresh off the bench he came on to set up Cristiano for the first goal after taking on his defender and delivering a wonderful cross. His efforts were dually noted by the Bernabeu who also gave him a standing ovation.

Jese

8.0

Jese did a good job with the amount of time he received and took part in what could've been the third goal of the night. Overall, good performance by the Spanish winger.

Mateo Kovacic

8.0

Just like Jese, Mateo did his best with the amount of time he got in this game. He was good in his position and was quick to deliver the ball when the team was attacking.

This was a good game against a truly good team but if Real has any hope of winning this competition, some of those defensive mistakes must be corrected.
