Karim Benzema used his omission from the France national team as motivation, tallying one goal and two assists in Real Madrid's five goal rout of Getafe. Before the match, Zinedine Zidane stated that Benzema was incredibly hurt and saddened by the issue but that he needed to spur on his striker.
"But the player himself is hurt and very sad. He wanted to play the Euros and it wasn't to be. What I have to do with Karim is give him all the confidence so that he can keep doing as well. I'm not going to say if this decision is fair or not."
Benzema showed zero signs that Didier Deschamps decision is negatively affecting his form with Los Blancos. Instead, it appeared that the Frenchman was only motivated to further prove his on-field worth.
Benzema opened the scoring for Real Madrid in the 29th minute and refused to look back. James Rodríguez received a 40-yard cross field pass which presented the creator with acres of space on the right. Both James and Benzema baffled Getafe's back line as the pair linked up on a chipped ball over the top that the Frenchman calmly finished with just the slightest of re-directions.
Benzema exhibited his composure and awareness, tight-roping the offside trap and leaving Getafe's defense frozen in time.
Benzema turned creator on Real Madrid's second goal as Isco played the give-and-go to spilt Getafe's defense. The Spaniard bolted past Yoda as Getafe backtracked. Already caught on their back heels, Benzema simply served as a support player in the run. After receiving the ball and facing just two defenders, Benzema possessed a few options.
He could've slowed play down and moved a through ball over to Cristiano Ronaldo on the right. After all, the Portuguese was calling for it. However, Benzema recognized the run of play and maintained the already established pace, one-touching a left footed through ball back to Isco.
Ultimately Isco finished off the pass with ease, but it's Benzema's understanding that created the quintessential goal scoring opportunity.
While Benzema's contributions on the first two goals were impressive, neither touch his efforts on the third. In the 50th minute, the striker dropped deep into midfield behind Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and James, to receive a pass from Pepe. The Frenchman controlled the pass and turned on a dime. Instead of exploiting the space Getafe allowed him, Benzema lofted a through ball over the top to a dashing Bale.
With at least 30 yards between the Welshman and Guaita, there was only ever going to be one winner.
Benzema is the glue that holds this Real Madrid attack together. His ability to recognize an opportunity unfolding in front of him and the capability to exploit such opportunities, make Zidane and Real Madrid more than just a dark horse in the hunt for silverware this season.
