Keylor Navas - 8
The Tico GK had a fine performance tonight. Regardless of the fact that Villarreal did not pose much of a threat on the attack, Navas was assertive when called upon. An effort by Denis Suarez was blocked by the Real Madrid keeper in what proved to be one of the few chances Villarreal had all night.
Danilo - 7
The right back was given the green light by Zidane to start tonight after Carvajal fell with an injury and was kept out of action. The Brazilian was a bit disoriented in the first half, with a couple of missteps which led to passes coming his way from midfield. But they ended in nothing. Fouls also piled up for Danilo. 3 fouls and a yellow card for saying something to the ref after that Casemiro tackle, although it is debatable wether the referee simply confused him for Casemiro (as ridiculous as that sounds). However, as the second half rolled around Danilo looked more confident on that right wing, especially on the attack. A good run from the Brazilian on the right wing led to a great cross into the box which found the run of Modric who scored the third goal for the Whites. Overall, considering his good second half performance, it was an acceptable performance by Danilo who will have to do a lot better to trouble Carvajal for that starting RB position.
Raphael Varane - 8
The young frenchman was a crucial part in that CB pairing with Ramos tonight. Timing his tackles perfectly, Rapha made 3 decisive clearances in his area and 4 blocks. A self-assured player who is slowly but surely coming back to his best form. An 89% passing rate showed his solidity in that defensive line.
Sergio Ramos - 8.5
A very strong performance from the Real Madrid captain tonight. Sergio was decisive and firm with his clearances and did not make a single rash tackle or silly decision in his area, which kept him out of the referees card after the Camas native did not commit a single foul tonight. He closed down the Villarreal players as soon as they received possession in front of him and was quick to clear the ball to avoid any troubles on the counter.
Marcelo - 8
The Brazilian went out full throttle on attack tonight. Marcelo created 3 chances from the left-wing and crossed the ball several times into our dangerous attacking line. The left back was lively on the left-wing completing 4 take-ons and 8 crosses into the box. Very good performance from the full back tonight.
Casemiro - 8
Casemiro was once again a soldier for Zidane in that midfield. The Brazilian had 3 interceptions in that DM position and has completely found his calling in this team. Although he should avoid some rash tackles at times, one of them which ultimately found him getting booked, Casemiro brings that defensive grit into this RM team and simultaneously allows those two geniuses to freely attack the opposition.
Toni Kroos - 8.5
Kroos was vital for Real Madrid tonight when trying to break down Villarreal's defensive block in front of goal. His calm passing also made the team position themselves better in front of the opposition's goal.
Luka Modric - 9.5
A truly spectacular performance by the little Croatian magician tonight as Modric was all over the pitch. Although he was heavily involved in attack and created 5 chances, he did not forget his defensive duties which shows in his 4 interceptions. Zidane said he wanted Modric to show his attacking prowess a bit more and boy did the Croat hear him. The midfield maestro was pure class tonight successfully completing 3 take ons and rounding off his passing masterclass with a 92% accuracy from his Nike boots. After having a shot on target which flew just over Asenjo's goal, it felt like the Croat was on his way to goal glory. Minute 76" came along and a fantastic cross from Danilo into the box found Modric who came running in and struck the ball with his left foot gliding the ball under Asenjo and into the goal. The Croatian was shortly then substituted to a roaring sound of applause from the Bernabeu faithful chanting his name. "Luka! Luka! Modric! Modric!" echoed throughout the stadium. They thought "that was spectacular", "that was magnificent", "that was breathtaking," but no dear friends that was simply Luka Modric.
Lucas Vasquez - 8
The academy graduate got his start tonight in place of Bale, which took many by surprise after some had thought Jese was going to start instead. The winger was pure dynamite on the pitch tonight. Fast breaks on the counter through the right wing and quick regrouping with Danilo in order to lend a helping hand on defense. Lucas showed his brilliant finishing technique in minute 69" after playing a beautiful give and go with Benzema, running into the penalty area and beating Asenjo with a swift shot into the goal. The Castilla product was then substituted by Jese in the 84th minute to an ovation from the fans.
Karim Benzema - 8.5
The Frenchman was class once again tonight and was an absolute threat in the opposition's box. Benzema had 5 shots on goal and created 4 chances for his team. Karim was rewarded shortly after he scored a header into an open net in the 41st minute after Asenjo palmed a cross straight into his path.
Cristiano Ronaldo - 8.0
A rather grey night for the Portuguese superstar tonight. Although Cristiano was very heavily marked by the Villarreal defense, he still managed to complete 4 take-ons and caused a lot of problems for Villarreal. But his goal efforts were not enough to get him on the scoreboard and the Portuguese star walked off the pitch with an injury. According to Zidane, the injury is not serious and it was a mainly precautionary action.
Isco for Kroos (75")
Isco was brought in for Kroos and the Malaga native used his time on the pitch very efficiently. Isco showed glimpses of his class with a couple of comfortable passes including a beautiful change of play from the left wing to the right. He also showed solidarity with his defenders when closing down the Villarreal players, although a clumsy foul from Isco earned Villarreal a free kick.
James Rodriguez for Luka Modric (79")
The Colombian showed glimpses of his technique with some individual skills when controlling the ball and passing the ball but was not on the pitch long enough to make a difference.
Jese for Lucas Vasquez
Only played for 7 minutes.
