Real Madrid paid AS Monaco €75 million for the transfer of James Rodríguez. Los Blancos and the French club agreed to make three €25 million payments which will end this summer. However, Real Madrid could end up paying €90 million if the following happens:
-€1 million each time Real Madrid qualifies to the Champions League over 5 years. That obviously increases the initial €75 million fee in €5 extra million as Real are expected to make the European competition every single year.
-€5 million if James Rodríguez is selected as one of the top three nominees for the FIFA Ballon D'Or. This hasn't happened yet and considering how the Colombian player is performing for Madrid lately, might not happen at all. This clause can only be activated in the following six years of the transfer.
-€5 million if James wins the Ballon D'Or in the following six years of the transfer.
All in all, it seems that Real Madrid will end up paying €80 million for James, and that should not be a surprise given that amount is what was initially reported in Spain.
