Real Madrid didn't get the result they hoped for in Wolfsburg and they will need a win at the Santiago Bernabéu to reach the Semifinals, something that most fans and pundits around the globe did not expect when the drew paired these two teams.

Zidane started the same men (except Danilo for Carvajal) that got an impressive 1-2 win at the Camp Nou. So what went wrong for Los Blancos?

  1. Danilo was a liability all night long. The Brazlian defender had improved quite a lot over the last few months because his first matches as a Real Madrid player did not cut it. However, he went back to his former self and completed a woeful performance against Julian Draxler, who tore him apart with his speed and dribbling ability.
  2. Zidane has a problem with his central defenders. Varane is playing his worst season since he became a Real Madrid but Ramos and Pepe are struggling as well. Tonight, the two veteran defenders couldn't contain Wolfsburg's counterattacks and they didn't play with enough composure to sustain the team.
  3. Madrid started well but changed their gameplan after Wolfsburg's first chance. Kroos and Modric were controlling the tempo of the game and Real were dominating, but Wolfsburg had a good chance to score at the 15th minute and then Los Blancos started to get rid of the ball way too soon and the game was a counterattacking fest, something that clearly benefited Draxler, Schürrle and Co.
  4. It's not over but Real will need to keep a clean sheet.
