Real Madrid kicks off their Champions League campaign tomorrow against Sporting Lisbon and Gareth Bale would love another shot at the final, especially because it’ll be played in his home city of Cardiff next year.
“I played in the 2014 Super Cup in Cardiff and it was an amazing experience to have my friends and family close by.
“I suppose there’s a little more motivation if there needs to be any more. Our aim is to win. We have only found out who is in the group. It’s a difficult group.
“Everyone wants to beat Real Madrid. We will just be concentrating on getting out of the group.
“We know we have a chance to make history and we will be trying our best to do that.”
Madrid is picked by most to win the group and head into the elimination rounds. At 27 Bale could be the first Welshman to win (possibly) a third Champions League title. This would eclipse two time winners Ian Rush, Joey Jones (Liverpool) and Ryan Giggs (Manchester United). He joked that he had a better chance since he was the only one still playing.
Bale has a chance to be only the sixth player to win the title in their home town after Enrique Mateos, Miguel Munoz, Alex Stepney, Angelo di Livio and Nicolas Anelka.
Here’s what he said about the possibility of reaching another UCL title.
“If we get to the final, whoever we get, it will be a very difficult game.
“You don’t get into the final by luck and you don’t win the tournament by luck. No matter how much you spend, it doesn’t make a difference. You have to have a great season to win the Champions League.”
The Royal Whites have had a fantastic start to their club season and now it’s time to kick off our Champions League campaign against Sporting on Match Day 1.
