Real Madrid improved their overall performance and completed a decent game against Atletico de Madrid. However, the match ended in a 0-0 draw and Los Blancos are now 10 points behind Barcelona in the table. Here are three takeaways from the game.
- The race for La Liga might as well be over for Zidane’s men. While it’s true that Los Blancos could virtually cut Barcelona’s lead to four points if they manage to win the two Clasicos they will play throughout the Liga season, it’s likely that they also end up dropping points here and there. Sure, Barcelona will draw some games and maybe even lose some, but so will Real Madrid. Still, Los Blancos must use this competition to improve their chemistry and start playing better.
- The draw was somewhat encouraging. This was one of the best matches Real Madrid have played this season. That’s not saying much because they had performed very poorly up until this point, but Zidane’s men dominated Atletico for two thirds of the game and clearly deserved more. They still couldn’t create many chances and that’s something that they will have to work on.
- La Liga needs VAR. One could argue that the outcome of this game would’ve been different had La Liga implemented VAR this summer. Ramos now has a broken nose and the referee refused to even consider that play a foul while Toni Kroos could’ve been severely injured and Borbalan only showed a yellow card on that play. Coach Zinedine Zidane decided not to complain about the referee and that was the right approach as his team has to improve, but that doesn’t mean that La Liga doesn’t need the VAR desperately.
