Carvajal could miss opening leg of Champions League’s Round of 16 as UEFA decide on potential ban

Carvajal earned a “suspicious” yellow card during the away match against APOEL which will force him to miss Dortmund’s visit to the Santiago Bernabeu. However, that yellow card will allow him to clear his record and potentially prevent a suspension during the knockout rounds. UEFA have been trying to prevent these yellow cards over the last few seasons and will investigate the situation with Carvajal. Reports indicate that the Spanish defender could be suspended for the opening leg of the Champions League’s Round of 16 if UEFA finally decide that Carvajal forced the issue to get booked voluntarily.

Still, UEFA did not punish Gerard Pique back in 2016 when Barcelona’s defender tried to do the exact same thing as Carvajal, meaning that Real Madrid believe that their right-back will escape any kind of punishment this time around. UEFA will make a final decision on this topic by December 7th and Los Blancos have prepared an appeal in case Carvajal is suspended.
