Update: Bale won’t play against Athletic Bilbao

Not again.

Bad news for Gareth Bale, who will miss Real Madrid’s trip to play against Athletic Bilbao this next Saturday after feeling some discomfort during Tuesday’s meeting with Fuenlabrada, where he made his return to the pitch two months after picking up an injury.

While Bale performed well against Fuenlabrada and probably even avoided a bigger scare against the Segunda Division B side, it’s clear that it would have been better to have him ready to play next Saturday. The match away against Bilbao will be much tougher.

Reports from Spain indicate that this is just a precaution as Madrid “don’t need to risk the player”, but the same was said when he had to leave the pitch against Dortmund two months ago and he ended up missing a significant amount of time. Los Blancos need Bale to stay healthy considering the way the squad was built, but was it a mistake to trust his ability to avoid injuries?
