Karim Benzema has never been a pure striker. His goalscoring problems have become more clear now that Cristiano Ronaldo can’t find the back of the net, however, and plenty of fans and analysts alike want Real Madrid to play with a true center-attacker. what should the club do?
It’s clear that Benzema is Zinedine Zidane’s striker. The French coach had Alvaro Morata at his disposal last season and the young player had to join Chelsea during the summer because of the lack of opportunities given throughout the 2016-2017 campaign. If Madrid really believe Zidane is their coach for the long term, Benzema must stay with the club as expected when both parts reached an agreement to extend his contract in September.
That doesn’t mean that Los Blancos should keep Borja Mayoral as the backup striker. Having a pure attacker like Alvaro Morata on the bench proved to be extremely useful last season and the team is clearly missing the goals he scored just months ago. It’s not easy to sign a player who knows he is going to be a reserve no matter what happens, though, and a young player also needs relevant minutes to keep improving, so Real Madrid are in a tough spot.
If Cristiano Ronaldo gains some momentum and starts scoring goals, people will forget Benzema’s struggles. He’s been this player for years and Real Madrid still managed to achieve impressive success with him as a starter as long as Ronaldo was scoring goal after goal. If the Portuguese star can’t bounce back, this will be a very long season for Los Blancos, though.
