It was a somewhat surprising result given Madrid’s injuries and suspensions as they hosted an unpredictable Sevilla tonight. Los Merengues put the game to bed in the first half, and coasted through the second.
Player ratings
Keylor Navas: 6. A quiet game for Navas today. On the three times he was tested, he looked comfortable and confident. This game marked his fourth clean sheet in La Liga this season.
Achraf Hakimi: 8. Standout performance today from the right back. Achraf looked to overlap and provide Lucas support on the right flank in possession of the ball and made numerous interceptions and tackles on defense. He netted his first goal in the 42nd minute, making him the first Moroccan to score in La Liga.
Nacho: 8.5. After just three minutes, Nacho opened the scoring from a poorly defended corner. A strong, confident shift today. Nacho tallied five interceptions and completed 48 of his 49 pass attempts.
Jesus Vallejo: 7.5. Despite Sergio Ramos’s suspension and Raphael Varane’s injury, there was no drop in quality at center-back today. Vallejo displayed pace, high tactical IQ, and composure. An under-appreciated performance from the young defender, who made a number of tackles and interceptions throughout the game.
Marcelo: 7. An average day at the office for the Brazilian left back. Marcelo was involved in the play leading up to the handball-penalty. He seemed less dangerous in the attack than normal, but looked to link with Asensio on the flank for the majority of attack.
Toni Kroos: 8. Masterclass shift from the German. Kroos was (surprisingly) active on defense, and linked up well with Modric and the wing players. Leading up to half-time, Kroos scored his second goal of the season from quick link-up play with Lucas. Toni was subbed off in the 63rd minute to make way for Marcos Llorente.
Modric: 8. More magic from the Croatian today. Modric showed off his dribbling and commanded the midfield in the Bernabeu until his substitution. He received a standing ovation from the crowd upon leaving the pitch.
Lucas Vazquez: 7.5. A very solid performance from Lucas. He was involved in attack from the right wing and supplied the assist for Kroos in the first half.
Marcos Asensio: 8.5. Arguably the best player on the pitch tonight. Asensio looked to be involved all over the pitch. Over the 90 minutes, he touched the ball more than any other Madrid player (96 times) and threatened Sevilla with his dribbling and passing.
Karim Benzema: 8. Benzema did a lot for the team today — he sacrificed himself for the sake of possession and to create opportunities for others. He was unlucky to hit the post in the second half, but he assisted Achraf for Madrid’s fifth of the night.
Cristiano Ronaldo: 9. Is the scoring form back? Confidence and precision on his first goal and a powerful shot under Rico on the penalty gave Ronaldo a brace on the night. A shorter shift for Ronaldo, but he provided a reliable presence on the field today.
Substitutes
Marcos Llorente: 6. The 22 year-old replaced Kroos in the 63rd. There wasn’t much for him to do, but he got involved in midfield build-up play and attack in the final third. He is proving to be more than a purely defensive-minded midfielder — threatening goal and keeping possession of the ball.
Dani Ceballos: 7. Considering the scoreline, Ceballos entered the game later than expected and wasn’t responsible for making a big impact on the game. Nonetheless, Ceballos got on the ball a lot. In less than 20 minutes, he touched the ball 40 times and completed all 35 of his attempted passes. We should see more of him, and not just in games where the scoreline is already decided.
Isco: 6. Isco made a surprising appearance in the 76th minute for Ronaldo. Nonetheless, there was very little left for Isco to do as he entered to see out the end of the game.
Man of the Match: Cristiano Ronaldo
