Post-Match Player Reactions: Real Madrid 3 - 0 Atlético de Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo. The man. The myth. The Real Madrid Legend. What more can be said about this strange phenomenon that happens to inhibit the same earth as us? Cristiano once told us in 2015, “Your love makes me stronger, your hate makes me unstoppable” and boy does he deliver on his promises! After seeing the last 3 performances by Zidane’s team, you could have never imagined they came right after a disappointing Clásico loss. A loss in which many fans and pundits, despite Cristiano destroying Bayern just a few days before, were calling for Cristiano’s exit from the club. This has only served to make Cristiano Ronaldo the most unstoppable man in this team.

Cristiano was everywhere today. He was glorious in attack and surprised many by helping in defense as well, to the point he even won a free kick… in Madrid’s own box. The Portuguese wonder had some encouraging words to share with the fans and here they are below.

Periodista: Bueno Cristiano, saludando a la afición, 400 goles ya en el Real Madrid, pero cómo te pones en la Champions! 3 al Bayern, tres hoy al Atléti!

Cristiano: Bueno hay que felicitar al equipo. El equipo ha estado tremendo, verdaderamente me tocó marcar los goles, pero el equipo ha estado fenomenal. Jugó muy bien desde el principio hasta el final y los goles vienen de un proceso natural, normal. Y estoy muy contento, la verdad que estoy muy contento por marcar los 3 goles y también por llegar al gol número 400 con el Real Madrid.

Periodista: Ha sido el mejor partido del Madrid del año y encima con la portería en cero

Cristiano: Muy bien, como he dicho antes, fue un partido total del equipo. El equipo ha estado fenomenal. Tenemos una buena ventaja pero no está todo cerrado. El Atlético sabemos que es un equipo muy bueno, muy fuerte, no es por acaso que están en la semifinal y hay que estar concentrados para el próximo miércoles.

Periodista: Esperabas sufrir tan poco contra el Atléti? Quizás también porque habéis sido muy superiores desde el principio.

Cristiano: Si hoy fue un partido lleno. Ya lo merecíamos contra ellos. Yo me recordé del partido de la liga, también tuvimos algunas ocasiones pero Oblak estaba fantástico, ha parado muchas veces y hoy afortunadamente entraron los balones.

Periodista: Pie y medio ya en Cardiff?

Cristiano: No. Falta un partido. Hay que estar concentrados como he dicho antes. Tres goles es una buena ventaja, pero no está cerrado.

Periodista: Cristiano hablamos hace una semana, hoy no te han pitado. ¿Cómo te van a pitar a ti?

Cristiano: [suelta una risa] Repito una vez más, sólo quiero que no me silben. ¿Lo demás? ¡Voy a intentar de dar lo mejor como siempre!

Reporter: Well Cristiano, greeting the fan base, 400 goals already for Real Madrid, but what a way to go in Champions! 3 against Bayern, 3 today against Atléti!

Cristiano: Well we have to thank the team. The team has been tremendous, I really had to score the goals, but the team has been phenomenal. Played well from beginning to end and the goals come from a natural process, normal. And I’m very happy, truly happy about scoring the 3 goals and also for reaching 400 goals with Real Madrid.

Reporter: It’s been the best match from Madrid this season and even more so with the clean sheet.

Cristiano: Very well, like I said before, it was a complete game from the team. The team was phenomenal. We have a good advantage but it’s not all done. Atlético, we know is a very good team, it’s not by chance that they are in the semifinals and we have to be focused for next Wednesday.

Reporter: Did you expect to suffer so little against Atleti? Maybe because you were much superior since the beginning.

Cristiano: Yes, we had a full match today. We deserved it against them already. I remembered the last match in La Liga, we also had various chances but Oblak was fantastic, he’s blocked many times and today fortunately the goals entered.

Reporter: Foot and a half in Cardiff?

Cristiano: No. There’s one match missing. We have to be focused like I’ve said before. 3 goals is a great advantage, but the tie is not closed.

Diego Simeone hates us. That is perfectly okay with us however, because the feeling is pretty much mutual. However, at some point, I can’t help but feel a tad bit sad for him. If it wasn’t for Real Madrid, he would have 2 Champions Leagues titles, having managed to reach the finals twice. Yet his team seemed quite… disillusioned on the pitch. Almost as having given up, and that is a quality that is just not something that has been present since Simeone took over. However, then I come back to earth and remember the sweet, sweet, feeling of victory over these Rojiblancos. A dejected Simeone also took to the press.

Periodista: Es una noche muy triste ¿no? para el equipo rojiblanco. ¿Qué explicación hay ahí?

Simeone: No hay explicación. El primer tiempo parejo, creo que podíamos haber concretado con esa acción que tuvo Gameiro, que tuvo mano a mano, que lo resolvió muy bien Navas. Y el segundo tiempo ellos fueron superiores, se llevaron la primera parte de la eliminatoria y queda la segunda.

Periodista: No se ganó ningún duelo individual al final, no ha habido presencia del Atléti en el partido.

Simeone: Bueno no lo vi tan así. A mí me gusto el equipo en el primer tiempo, en el segundo tiempo ellos con espacio saben atacar muy bien y la verdad es que en esta primera eliminatoria lo hicieron muy bien.

Periodista: Cómo veías venir ese primer gol de Cristiano Ronaldo, porque te he visto que decías ¡Fuera, fuera! porque veías que eso empezaría mal.

Simeone: No. Bueno, no importa si estaba fuera o dentro el árbitro hubiera decidido lo que quería, pero así todo, ellos ganaron bien hoy.

Periodista: Es una indirecta porque el gol estaba fuera de jueg-

Simeone: (interrumpiendo) No. Es una directa. No indirecta.

Periodista: Directa totalmente, ¿no?

Simeone: Si.

Periodista: La hemos visto varias veces repetido y la verdad es que parece que no lo es, no es fuera de juego porque no interviene en la acción en la primera jugada. Pero ¿cómo lo has visto tú?

Simeone: Gol. Gol. La vi gol. (Periodista trata de hablar) Cuando entra dentro del arco, y el árbitro señala al medio, es gol.

Periodista: Lucas también ha sufrido, no sé del lateral derecho pero—

Simeone: Lucas. Seguramente que el trabajo de él, en una posición totalmente que no es la de él, lo hizo bastante bien y es una pena porque creo que en el primer tiempo estuvimos bastante cerca, pero siempre creo que las dificultades existen. Está claro que tres a cero para muchos es imposible. Yo no creo que es imposible. Yo creo que tenemos el partido de vuelta, y tenemos todavía nuestras opciones.

Simeone: Le digo a mis jugadores, y obviamente a la gente que tenemos nuestras opciones.

Reporter: It’s a very sad night, right? For the ‘Rojiblancos’. What explanation is there?

Obviamente sabíamos la importancia de la eliminatoria, de jugar una final contra un gran equipo que es el Atlético de Madrid, pero para ellos y para nosotros sabemos que los derbis se viven de manera distinta. Teníamos ganas de conseguir un resultado de esta manera y jugando por lo general un partido impecable.

Periodista: Vamos por partes. ¿Habéis jugado muy bien o el Atlético Madrid no ha sido de otras veces?

Ramos: Bueno, tampoco nos ha sorprendido su manera de jugar. Sabemos que ellos en la contra cualquier error te pueden penalizar con goles porque tienen jugadores muy rápidos de calidad. Como Griezmann, Kevin Gameiro, Carrasco, son jugadores que tienes qué mantener un nivel de concentración al máximo en todos los sentidos. Y pues no le hemos dado ni motivo ni argumento para intentar ellos hacer daño en ese aspecto. Hemos hecho nosotros también una presión muy alta que eso pues te permite robar en campo contrario y tener prácticamente el dominio del juego.

Reporter: You’re one of the happiest of the 15 in the dressing room, I don’t really know how many are in there, how are you?

Ramos: Well, I’d say that over 90,000, bringing in also the fans and all of the madridismo that today, from the very first second that we jumped into the pitch, we felt that this was a different match. Obviously we knew the importance of this tie, of playing a final against a very tough team that is Atletico de Madrid. But for them and for us we know that we live derbies in a different manner. We had a desire to get a good result this way and generally playing an impeccable match.

Reporter: Let’s take it in parts. Have you played really well or is this not the same Atletico de Madrid of times past?

Ramos: Well, they also haven’t surprised us in their style of play. We know that in the counter any error they can penalize you with goals because they have players that are quick and of quality. Players like Griezmann, Kevin Gameiro, Carrasco, they’re players that force you into maintaining a maximum level of concentration in every sense. We haven’t given them any motive or chance to hurt us in that aspect. We’ve also employed a very high pressure which also allowed us to steal in their half and basically dominate the match.

Zidane: Si hicimos un gran partido. Yo creo que.. pero como tú sabes, de todas formas, es un partido. Metimos 3 goles, mantuvimos la portería en cero, pero hay partido de vuelta, y tú sabes que en el fútbol, hasta que no pite el árbitro en la segunda parte al final del partido, no sabemos lo que puede pasar. Podemos estar contentos con lo que hicimos porque, es verdad, que los chicos han hecho un gran partido todos y puedo estar orgulloso de todos.

Periodista: Tu grado de satisfacción ¿cuál es? porque habéis ganados todos los duelos individuales.

Zidane: Sí, enorme. La primera media hora ha sido fantástica. Bueno, pero ahora tenemos que descansar, pensar que, bueno, hicimos un gran partido, pero, como tú sabes esto, no hemos ganado todavía nada. Entonces a pensar ya en el partido del sábado, que tenemos un partido importante en la liga y mañana pensar--¡Vamos a disfrutar hoy!-- pero ya mañana tenemos que pensar en el partido del sábado y luego el partido de vuelta. Tú sabes que la eliminatoria hasta que no pita el árbitro no está sentenciado.
