It has become a Real Madrid tradition to hold the “Corazón Classic Match” at least once every year to raise money for a charitable cause. On this occasion, the purpose was to deliver proceeds to the projects being conducted by Real Madrid’s foundation in Africa.
The game was rather free flowing and chance friendly, due to the lackadaisical commitment to defending and carefree spirit of the players. Despite this game-state, it took half an hour for the first goal to arrive, with Roberto Carlos playing a beautiful left-footed chip-cross over the defense for Morientes to finish. With the goals now flowing, Luis Figo (who was probably the “man-of-the-match”) solidified Real’s lead with a gorgeous free-kick only six minutes later.
In the second half, Real found the net once again in the same way that they scored their first. Sávio drifted in from the right-wing and played an accurate chip-cross into the path of Morientes, who scored another headed goal. The icing was added to the cake when Alfonso played an excellent through ball that Congo finished neatly.
