Real Madrid obtained a well-deserved 0-3 win against Deportivo in what was the opening game of their 2017-18 La Liga season. It’s still early in the campaign but here are three things we learned from Madrid’s victory.

  1. Zidane is not ready to start making rotations just yet. The French manager knows that his players don’t need to rest right now and is trying to consolidate his squad during the first few weeks of the season. Players like Marcos Llorente, Dani Ceballos or Theo aren’t getting many chances but they will play minutes next Wednesday when Fiorentina visit Real Madrid’s stadium to play the Trofeo Bernabeu.
  2. Casemiro is in great form. Tough times ahead of Marcos Llorente. Most fans expected Llorente to compete with Casemiro for the starting spot but so far the Brazilian midfielder has been so good that Llorente has barely featured for Los Blancos. He is a very capable player but it won’t be easy for him to earn Casemiro’s spot. Furthermore, it looks like Zidane also sees Kovacic as a potential replacement for Casemiro, so Llorente will also have to battle against the Croatian midfielder for the spot.
  3. Real Madrid kept a clean sheet. Los Blancos struggled defensive last season and at least they managed to keep a clean sheet in the opening game. Keylor Navas deserves some credit for that because Deportivo definitely had their chances to score.
