This doesn’t look great.

Mateo Kovacic came off injured about 20 minutes into Real Madrid’s Champions League opener against APOEL. Toni Kroos took his place once he came off the pitch.

MARCA is reporting that the injury is a puncture in the adductor of his right leg. It remains unclear how bad the injury is, but what is clear is that Real are already facing devastating injury problems early on in their 2017-2018 campaign. The Croatian was providing Real with incredible depth at the midfield position, and is an amazing fit for Real’s scheme.

Kovacic’s injury took place after completing a pass. He pulled up in clear pain and had to leave the pitch in tears. A devastating loss for Real Madrid and incredibly difficult for Kovacic. He was having a great pre-season and season early on for Real, and was looking to be on his way to having a storied Real Madrid career.
