Marcos Llorente has signed a new contract with the club today, extending his stay until the 30th of June 2021. This is big news for the young man, as it provides confirmation of Madrid’s confidence in him. Marcos hasn’t featured as often as he would’ve hoped so far this year, but we are still in the early stages of the season — and this renewal will only serve as added motivation for him to fight for a place.

For those of you who aren’t yet familiar with Llorente, this is a player who has risen through the club’s youth system, and is destined to achieve big things with the first team. After spending six years in the academy, he was promoted to Castilla, where I got the chance to see him up close on a weekly basis. It wasn’t long before he became a starter, and was instrumental in the star-studded ‘2015/16’ squad’s promotion chasing campaign. He also made his first team debut during that season, replacing Kovačić in a league match against Levante. After that, it was clear he needed some top level experience to realize his first team dream.
Deportivo Alavés provided the perfect opportunity for him, but I’m not even sure world renowned fanboy Kiyan Sobhani could have predicted just how good his year would go on to be. Marcos was vital for Alavés as they went on to secure a top half La Liga finish; and make the Copa Del Rey final. They unfortunately lost to Barcelona on the day, with new left back Theo scoring for the underdogs, but the defeat took nothing away from a stellar season for Llorente.

As this contract suggests, he is very much still one for the future. It will be interesting to see how the season pans out for Llorente. He will surely see more minutes as the year progresses, and can only get better and better. Be warned — if he hasn’t won you over yet, he will soon enough!
