Lucas Vazquez was about the only reason to smile after Real Madrid’s draw against Numancia last night. The Spanish winger scored two goals and completed a good overall performance on a night when most of the players struggled and didn’t show up.
Some articles published on MARCA and AS are now advocating that Zidane should start Vazquez from now on, and while he deserves praise for playing hard, giving Vazquez a spot in the starting XI would not solve Madrid’s current woes as the team must play better and Lucas would not help them there.
Vazquez is a hard worker and a good asset to have on the squad because of his speed. He can make an impact coming off the bench as he’s done over the last two seasons. Still, as has been said time and time again, Real Madrid need to control the tempo of the game, dominate the possession in the midfield and stop crossing the ball. Players like Kovacic, Asensio or Ceballos could help because Madrid, but not Vazquez.
Still, it’s clear that Zidane should try to shake things up and make some changes. The current squad isn’t getting the job done and while starting Vazquez wouldn’t help much, at least it would mean that Zidane and his coaching staff are aware of how poorly the team has been performing lately.
