Real Madrid left-back Marcelo was forced to leave the team’s match against Viktoria Plzen with what appeared to be an ankle injury. The defender was visibly in pain and his status for Sunday’s El Clasico against Barcelona was uncertain, although coach Julen Lopetegui said during the press conference that he might have time to recover and play in that crucial match.

“He has a strong knock and we will see how he goes from there, I am optimistic and he could recover in time for El Clasico if it all goes well,” said Lopetegui after the game before revealing that Marcelo will have tests this Thursday to confirm the extent of this injury.

“Now I’m feeling well, it was a strong tackle and I thought I broke my foot again,” said Marcelo after the game, possibly suggesting that the injury isn’t serious enough to keep him out of the crucial El Clasico this next Sunday.
