Real Madrid wonder kid Marco Asensio delivered some head-scratching quotes this Tuesday.
“I don’t see it as a crisis, it is not for me to lead from the front, there are other players that have been at the club for longer, they are more experienced, have a higher status and it is down to them,” said Asensio.
The club basically decided to sell Cristiano Ronaldo because they thought Asensio was ready to take the next step and become the cornerstone of what Real Madrid is building. However, it seems that not only he isn’t ready to do so, but also that he doesn’t want to. Should Los Blancos expect him to become that kind of player when he has publicly admitted that he doesn’t want that kind of role?
It’s true that players like Bale, Benzema, Isco, Modric or Kroos should be performing better according to their salaries and roles. But Asensio should keep in mind that Raul, Casillas or Ramos became club legends by embracing that role as leaders even when there were more experienced players on the roster at the time.
“If you want to win you should give me the start, if you don’t want to win then don’t do it,” said Raul to coach Jorge Valdano when he was still a prospect right before a Madrid derby against Atletico.
Asensio is still very young and can still develop that kind of killer instinct, but for the moment these quotes are something to keep in mind when the board builds the squad for next season.
