Exequiel Palacios is expected to sign for Real Madrid in the upcoming transfer window, before immediately be loaned back to River Plate. The problem for River Plate president, Rodolfo D’Onofrio, was that the club were one of the last to be informed of such a move. The club president spoke with Marca and revealed both his shock and disgust at being bypassed by the reigning European Champions: “Until now we thought it was all false, but it isn’t, as we have confirmed this from the Exequiel’s representative,” he told Marca.
“It surprises us, if it is indeed true, that an institution like Real Madrid have acted in this manner—negotiating directly with the player, without respecting a club like River— and all of this behind our back” he commented. D’Onforio reportedly met with Palacios agent on Thursday to make sense of the rumors, but when faced with the reality—he was far from happy.
”I already said it yesterday and I will repeat it again: I did not expect it, this does not correspond with the historical ties and values that we have with Real Madrid, that have served us from the time of Don Alfredo Di Stefano until present day.” If in fact true, Madrid will need to work to mitigate the damage done to their relationship with the Argentine powerhouse. Real Madrid are a club built on values and to stray from those values, even for a potential elite talent, is not excusable. Apologies will likely be sent in the coming days and hopefully the relationship between both clubs can be repaired.
