After the backlash and controversy following Marco Asensio’s statements on his perceived lack of ambition, the Spaniard came out and spoke with Marca to bring clarity to those quotes. “I think it was misinterpreted, what I said—I was referring to the current roles in the team. Of course I want to be a starter!” Marco was projected for big things this season and was given a starting role by former coach Julen Lopetegui, but has failed to capitalize on his chances in the early part of the season. The remaining six months of the season will be defining for Asensio and will help bring clarity to his role, for not only this season, but for the club’s future planning.

“I want to succeed at Real Madrid an become an important player” he commented. The uproar from his statements means one thing for Asensio, he now knows he needs to prove a point on the pitch. “ I have to be at my best and give my best to the team, it’s now time to do my talking on the pitch”. All questions of Marco’s frail mentality are looking to be pushed to the side. As was expected by many circles, his words were misconstrued. “I am ambitious—I am own biggest critic, the most demanding person with me is me” he concluded emphatically.

Next weekend’s match away to Eibar will be Asensio’s first chance to change the narrative surrounding his quotes and his poor start to the season. This interview, what would be labeled as a bad PR moment, could be the light that ignites the rest of Marco’s season. All eyes will be on the number 20 heading into Saturday.
