Drawing Board: Real Madrid’s 3-1 Win Against PSG

This match deserved to be captured in art

Sofi Serg

So, how are you today, Madridistas? The team gave us a reason to think positive and to believe until the end. The match against PSG was very inspiring, it was like a flash of colour after the team’s dull struggles in La Liga. I also think some of the best moments of that match are definitely worth to be illustrated. Have a look at my new sketches, which I made specially for Managing Madrid.

As I didn’t attend the stadium for the match, I had to use a broadcast to make these sketches. That’s a usual way for me to illustrate any match. How it works: I make a screenshot each time I spot any interesting or important moment in a match, then I use it as a reference. Sometimes I can also use photos by sports photographers (if I find any rare moment or interesting angle captured by them).

As always, I was making the sketches during/right after the match to not forget the emotions of the game. It usually takes about 20-30 minutes to create one sketch.

Emotional Cristiano... He is the main hero of every Real Madrid’s match in the Champions League this season. Photo reference by Manuel Queimadelos Alonso.

And here’s my sketch of Marcelo, he was superb in that match. He nearly got a terrible injury in the beginning of the first half but was brave enough to continue playing. His goal in the second half is like a proof that you can get something great even after you get hurt, it’s like a motivation to never stop fighting for your aim.

He always has that inner light

They kicked him once, they kicked him twice

His screaming cry in the nervous night

They nearly broke him like an ice

Now the fans have a nervous sigh

We wish he hadn’t had to make a sacrifice

An injury is not a price

But he’s gonna be alright

He’s never giving up in the middle of a fight...

Poem by me.

Here’s one more drawing of Cristiano (photo reference by Denis Doyle). By the way, did you notice some magic during his penalty kick?

Looks like Cristiano elevated the ball using the power of thought, doesn’t it? Crazy. This person does everything in an unusual way, even penalty shots. According to Rio Ferdinand, Cristiano used to practise that kick style in training during his Manchester United career.

Marcelo and Marco Asensio celebrating the third goal. As a huge fan of goal celebrations, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to draw this one. Plus, I really liked to use those orange boots as a bright detail in the sketches.

And this is my sketch of our perfect Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. I made it using a screenshot from the broadcast. The Grada Fans were amazing in that match, with a beautiful banner and a great support for the team. Seems like they brought a new sound equipment because the chants (and the speaker) sounded very loud not only in the match against PSG, but also in a few previous home matches, especially in the match against Real Sociedad. By the way, here are my sketches of Lucas Vazquez and Sergio Ramos during that match:

So, what’s your favourite moment from the match against PSG? What’s your prediction for the match in Paris? And would you like to see more illustrated reviews of Real Madrid’s matches?
