Three takeaways from Real Madrid’s 1-2 win against Bayern Munich

Real Madrid conquered the Allianz Arena and obtained an important 1-2 win ahead of the second leg which will be played at the Santiago Bernabeu next Tuesday. Here are three takeaways from the game.

  1. Vazquez completed his best performance in a Real Madrid uniform. Carvajal’s injury could’ve been devastating given that Franck Ribery was playing like he was 25 years old again. Defender Nacho Fernandez is still injured so Zidane had to trust Vazquez to shut the French winger down and so he did. Vazquez showed the kind of commitment every coach wants to see in these games.
  2. Ronaldo still needs a partner upfront. Cristiano Ronaldo is the team’s best player by a mile and Real Madrid need to make him comfortable. Playing by himself in the offensive line isn’t his game and right now it’s clear that he plays better when Benzema is on the field. Perhaps next season Los Blancos can replace Benzema with another striker who can also make Ronaldo’s job easier, but right now the French attacker should be on the field.
  3. Asensio. This young player is something else. His finish on Real’s second goal proves that he is not afraid of the bright lights. He will soon become a regular starter for this club, there’s no doubt about that.
