Real Madrid have contacted Portuguese coach Andre Villas-Boas to replace Zinedine Zidane, according to Radio Montecarlo. Villas-Boas is now a free agent after coaching in Shanghai, so his signing would be a cheap option for Los Blancos, who would only have to pay his salary and not a fee.
However, Villas-Boas’ coaching career is in obvious decline. Once labeled as one of the most promising coaches in European football, his tenure in Chelsea —where he didn’t even finish his debut season— showed that he might not be ready to coach an elite club. He did just fine with Tottenham Hotspur right after Chelsea, and then coached Zenit and Shanghai.
This report doesn’t seem likely. It’s true that some fans could still trust Villas-Boas’ potential and talent, but Madrid should be wary of how badly the Portuguese coach got along with some Chelsea legends.
Either way, it definitely seems that Madrid are not going to name their next coach any time soon.
