Real Madrid have announced that Julen Lopetegui will be their coach right after the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Julen Lopetegui will be Real Madrid’s coach after the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Real Madrid confirm that Lopegui will coach the first team for the next three seasons. He will join the club after Spain’s participation in the World Cup after two years coaching the National Team.

This is somewhat surprising given that Lopetegui didn’t seem to be an option for the club. Coaches like Pochettino, Klopp or Guti appeared to be clearly ahead of Lopetegui in Madrid’s list, but he finally got the job.

Lopetegui did a decent job with Porto but his work with the Spanish national team is what ensured him the coaching job. He is a big fan of possession football and is one of Isco’s biggest fans, so the Spanish midfielder will surely be happy about his new coach.
