It’s now official. The Spanish National Team led by Director of Football Fernando Hierro and President Luis Rubiales have sacked Julen Lopetegui just two days ahead of their debut match against Portugal. Lopetegui’s deal to coach Real Madrid after the World Cup went public this Tuesday and the Spanish National Team felt betrayed enough to think that he doesn’t deserve to be on the bench in the FIFA World Cup.
“You can’t do things this way, two or three days before the World Cup. We have been compelled to make this decision,” said Rubiales.
While it’s clear that Lopetegui’s deal with Real Madrid could’ve disrupted Spain’s camp just a bit, the Spanish Football Federation pushed the panic button a bit too early, given that this will make the situation worse and not better.
Furthermore, the 23 players on Spain’s camp were picked by Julen Lopetegui. He has been coaching this team for the last two years and naming another coach right now will only hurt Spain’s chances of finding success in the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
