Young goalkeeper Andriy Lunin was unveiled with Real Madrid today. Even though it’s not clear whether he will stay in the first team this season or not, Lunin delivered some interesting quotes about his future and his potential.
“I’m thrilled to be here. It’s the best club in the world and it’s a real honour to be part of Real Madrid. I’m very happy. I chose Real Madrid because winning is the most important element of sport and like any other sporting professional, I want to win and keep winning. Right now I’m training with the team and I’m very happy. I want to pick up more experience and grow stronger every day, because I’ll be surrounded by the best players in the world. Beyond this, we’ll discuss what is best for me with the club,” said Lunin.
The Ukrainian keeper was asked time and time again about whether he had any kind of idols growing up as a goalkeeper.
“There are many good, strong goalkeepers in the world and I try to learn from every one of them to improve. Keylor Navas and Courtois are two top keepers. Keylor is in the team now and I’m thrilled to have the chance to train alongside him and learn all I can. Of the Real Madrid goalkeepers, Iker Casillas was one that I learned an awful lot from as a kid and I followed his matches and his development closely,” he explained. It’s important to note that he mentioned Courtois when asked specifically about him.
Lunin could be leaving on a loan deal this summer if Real Madrid decide to sign Thibaut Courtois and keep both Navas and Kiko Casilla. However, if Casilla doesn’t accept a role as the third goalkeeper given the offers he has, Lunin could be that man, spending the season in the Spanish capital while learning from both Courtois and Navas. Still, it’s clear that he will need to play minutes to gain experience some time, so a loan deal makes sense both for Madrid and Lunin.
