Player Ratings: Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid, 2018 UEFA Super Cup

Real Madrid lost the Super Cup in dramatic fashion after a terrible second half and an even worse extra time. The defenders put on a worrying performance.

Keylor Navas: 4 - The Costa Rican keeper needed at least a solid performance to contend for the starting spot with Thibaut Courtois. However, he dodged Diego Costa’s shot on Atletico’s opening goal instead of going for the save. He conceded three more goals apart from that one as well. Is this the end of Navas’ era as the starting goalkeeper?

Carvajal: 5 - Decent game but not brilliant. He didn’t contribute much offensively but he tried as hard as always. Defensively, Carvajal was decent but required a bit too much help from his teammates a few times. He will improve.

Varane: 3 - His mistake on Atlético's game-winning goal just can't happen. It's that simple.

Ramos: 4 - Too confident all game long. Just a terrible game from Madrid’s two main defenders.

Marcelo: 6 - He was everywhere during the first half and his creativity caused a lot of damage to Atleti’s disciplined defensive system. He’s just an unstoppable force on offense and Madrid will have a hard time replacing his contribution whenever he gets injured/suspended. Wasn't all that effective during the second half.

Casemiro: 5 - It’s always very hard to rate Casemiro. As solid as he often is defensively and he was decent tonight, his complete lack of skills to distribute the ball end up hurting Real Madrid a lot when Los Blancos try to move the ball with flow and pace. It’s clear that this is something Lopetegui has to live with, given the kind of defensive performances he completes throughout the season. However, one has to wonder if it wouldn’t be worth it to at least try a different kind of midfield against smaller teams.

Kroos: 4 - Controlled the game well during the first half but didn't help the team at keeping the ball during the second.

Isco: 4 - Tried to be involved all game long but wasn't effective. It's clear that he isn't fit just yet.

Asensio: 4 - Had a few good chances to score and wasted them. He will be competing for a starting spot once Modric is fit enough and he will need to do more if he wants to be as relevant as he should be.

Bale: 8 - Delivered a brilliant cross on Benzema's opening goal and created more valuable chances. He was a playmaker and not a finisher tonight but Lopetegui will be hoping to see these kind of performances all year long.

Benzema: 7 - Scored Madrid’s first goal and positioned himself well enough to force Atlético's penalty on Madrid’s second. Can't complain about his performance.

Modric: 5 - Entered the game during the second half and didn't help his team when Los Blancos were being dominated. He joined the squad last week and is not ready to play and perform just yet.

Lucas Vázquez: 5 - It was tough for him to do anything considering how bad the team was playing. Will need to offer more when called upon this season though.

Ceballos: 5 - Same case as Vázquez. Ceballos was put in a tough spot but he will need to do better and change the course of the game when needed.

Mayoral: 5 - Lopetegui trusted him when Atletico got the lead during the extra time. Real Madrid didn't create chances and therefore Mayoral just wasn't able to do much.
